BASF expands resin production in China

By doubling its production capacity for polyester and polyurethane resins at the Caojing site, BASF is responding to the growing demand for automotive coatings in the Asia-Pacific region. From 2026, binder production is also to be increased through process optimisation.

BASF has increased its production capacity for polyester and polyurethane resins at its site in Caojing, China, from 8,000 tonnes to 18,800 tonnes per year. Opened in 2015, the facility is located in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP) and supplies the automotive industry in China and across the Asia-Pacific region with key raw materials for coatings. The highly automated plant produces, among other materials, acrylates, polyesters, polyurethanes, and binders for electrodeposition coatings.
This latest expansion is part of BASF’s strategic approach to addressing the growing demand for automotive coatings in the region. In addition, the company plans to increase its production volume of binders for e-coat applications from early 2026 by implementing targeted process optimisations.

Strategic response to market dynamics in Asia-Pacific
With this capacity expansion, BASF aims to strengthen its position in the highly competitive automotive coatings market and support OEMs in the region in meeting their increasing demand. The Caojing site plays a central role in this strategy, supplying raw materials for all coating layers – from primer to topcoat. The entire facility is powered by 100 % renewable energy. In 2025, the site also marks its tenth anniversary.
